Intense ruby red colour. Fruity bouquet with red berry notes. Very well structured, mellow, long-lasting flavour with smooth, velvety tannins
Vinous 91 points - Bright red cherries, stone fruits, smoke and tobacco are some of the notes that jump from the glass in the 2013 Rosso di Montalcino. In this vintage, the Rosso is bright, floral and medium in body, all of which make it extremely versatile. This is another fabulous Rosso from Il Poggione and also a terrific introduction to the year in Montalcino.  (Feb 2015)

Wine Advocate 89 points - The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino is a dark and saturated wine with aromas that are much more masculine and muscular than your standard Rosso. The wine awards whiffs of dark cherry, cedar wood, spice, licorice and wet earth. All the while it offers a pretty portrait of Montalcino’s southern subzone where the weather is slightly more influenced by Mediterranean patterns. The mouthfeel delivers a touch of acidic bitterness that is reminiscent of white cherry or cranberry. This Rosso can be cheerfully consumed within the next three to five years. (Feb 2015)

Wine maker notes
Younger, more accessible version of Brunello, but already very well-developed with a strong character, Rosso di Montalcino is a very important wine for Tenuta Il Poggione. Produced entirely from Sangiovese grapes from the youngest of the estate’s vineyards, Rosso di Montalcino is matured for 12 months in large barrels before undergoing a period of bottle aging. Aging in wood, though not obligatory for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, tones down the tannins typical of a young Sangiovese and gives this red wine the complex aroma and body that make it a great “young Brunello”.

Food pairing
pasta with meat sauce, roasted and grilled meats, medium strength cheeses.
